WikiProject Solar System (Rated Start-class, Mid-importance) This article is within the scope of Updated Chandra Image of Comet C/1999 S4 Chandra's image of Comet LINEAR (originally released in July 2000, see #4 below) has been updated to incorporate new data that brings out the faint extended emission around the comet and remove certain processing artifacts. Comet C/1999 S4 (LINEAR) passed its closest point to Earth, 0.364 AU, on 23 July 2000, 3 days before it reached perihelion. Coincidentally, the comet completely disintegrated within a few days of Comet C/1999 S4 (LINEAR) showed a very special behaviour between 28 June and1 July 2000. Optical observations of the dust coma in two distinct continuum bandsrevealed that it changed morphologically as well as in colour.
